About Worth the Stamp

Somewhere along the way, handwritten letters became rare. It became odd to send things through the mail.

Instead you can send a text in seconds. You can send someone an email in minutes. You can send someone a note and they can react with an emoji. We can scroll endlessly through updates on our phones. But we’re really not connecting the way we used to. That makes me a little sad!

What I love about writing letters is that it feels personal. There’s something special about writing someone. It’s a different feeling when you receive something in your mailbox that’s not a bill. And when you finally can open that envelope with your name written on it, it’s fun. It means something. Someone actually slowed down. They thought about you. They took the time to write you something you couldn’t simply delete, swipe away, or forget to reply to.

That’s why I created Worth the Stamp. Because I think there’s still room in our lives for something more personal. And sometimes, sending a letter is worth the stamp.

And it all started with just one letter.

It All Started With a Letter

Growing up, one of my favorite parts of the day was checking the mailbox. This was back in the nineties, long before inboxes full of email, texting, and social media were even a thing. I actually had over 100 pen pals, from all around the world, several countries, different states.

Every letter I received in the mail felt like a little surprise. Some of these people I wrote to for just a few months. Some of them lasted for a few years.

And one of those pen pals I had at that time ended up becoming one of my closest lifelong friends. We’ve been friends now for more than thirty years, and she’s one of my closest friends and one of my favorite travel buddies. We’ve shared adventures, we’ve made new memories, we’ve laughed, we’ve cried, and our friendship continues to prove that one handwritten letter can grow into a lifelong friendship.

This experience of having pen pals and writing letters taught me something. Sometimes the best connections you can make with people aren’t built overnight, or even with people in your direct area. They’re built one conversation, one letter, and one shared story at a time.

My Hope

I hope this website helps you write one more letter than you would have otherwise.

Maybe you’ve never written a letter before, or you don’t know where to start. Maybe you want to write to an old friend, a grandparent, a child away at camp, a military service member, an old love, a new pen pal, or someone who’s simply been on your mind.

Because you never really know what a letter will mean to the person who receives it. Sometimes it’s just a nice surprise. Sometimes it’s exactly what they needed to brighten their day.
